Making tortillas in Turrialba

Bite-sized trip
  • Itinerary:
    Turrialba
  • Duration:
    3 days / 2 nights (flexible)
  • Price:
From £ 182.- per person (excluding flights)
  • From £ 135,- per child (up to 11 years)
Venture off to the scenic Turrialba volcano famed not only for its coffee produce, but also a vast array of thrilling activities. Here you'll stay in a charming lodge with incredible views, and get a first hand experience in tortilla making. Feeling adventurous? Then there is exceptional white water rafting (best in the country) and a canyoning tour to keep you busy and excited!

Day 1 – Arrival into Turrialba

Turrialba is picturesque mountain town with beautiful views, a laid-back atmosphere and lots of coffee! You’ll stay in a family-run eco-lodge set by the side of the smoking Turrialba volcano, and surrounded by lush gardens. The town is also home to plenty of local restaurants, and is a great place to relax and breathe in the fresh air. There’s nothing planned for you today so you’ll have plenty of time to explore the town. Don’t stay up too late though as tomorrow brings a new adventure and an early start.

Days 2-3 – Tortilla workshop & departure

Today you’ll visit Dona Merian at her home, where she’ll welcome you with open arms and teach you the art of making the best tasting tortillas. This is a perfect chance to brush up (and improve) your Spanish too, although your English-speaking guide will be right by your side. Dona Merian will talk you through the process of tortilla making and show you the ropes so you could kneed the dough yourself, shape your tortillas and cook them with her guidance. You’ll then get to taste your culinary masterpieces. Try it the local way, with “natilla” (the Costa Rican sour cream)! The rest of your time in Turrialba is free. Enjoy the nature, venture out to visit one of the coffee farms or simply sit back and watch the world go by.

The next morning after breakfast you’ll continue your journey to the next destination.
