Canada landscape view

Day 1 – Along the Icefields Parkway to the Athabasca glacier

Over the course of the next two days, you’ll witness thundering waterfalls, soaring rock spires, sparkling emerald lakes, deep gorges, endless pine forest, and diverse wildlife along the 232km stretch of highway that runs along the Continental Divide. The journey between Lake Louise and Jasper can be covered in just 3 hours without stops, but with so much to see, why rush?

Glacier walk

The region is also home to a number of ancient and accessible glaciers, and this afternoon you’ll join a small group to traverse the incredible Athabasca Glacier with an experienced guide. With crampons on, you’ll hike the frozen landscape, passing ice caves, deep crevasses, and crystal clear streams as you go.

*The hike requires a moderate level of fitness, and is suitable for over 7s. If your kids are younger then you can still admire the glacier from the foot.

After your glacial tour comes to an end, it’s time to hop back in the car and make your way to your rustic lodging at Saskatchewan River Crossing. Well-appointed and perfectly functional, it’s the ideal base to spend the night, and of course is set in a spectacular alpine location.

Day 2 – Onward to Banff

After breakfast, you’ll set off on the second leg of your journey along one of the best drives in the entire world. Make sure you pack a picnic too, as there are some incredible natural spots to stop for lunch but few food services along the way. As you plunder along through jaw-dropping scenery, we highly recommend stopping at Bow Summit for mesmerising views of Peyto Lake and its vibrant blue waters.
