Best time to visit Cambodia

Weather and climate

Despite having two seasons, it’s actually possible to visit Cambodia at any time of year. However, if you’re looking for the best time to go then the dry season, which runs from October-May, is ideal. The rainy season runs from the end of May through to the first half of October, but even this is still a great time to go! Though wet, the scenery is deep green and the waterfalls and rivers are at their most spectacular.

February Half Term

February is one of the best times to visit Cambodia, with warm, dry weather across the country and plenty of sunshine—ideal for family adventures. In Siem Reap, you can cycle among ancient ruins, watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat, and enjoy a boat ride on the Tonle Sap, where you can visit floating villages. For an island escape, head to Koh Rong Samloem, for a quiet getaway filled with golden beaches and warm waters, perfect for paddling, snorkelling and slowing down together.

Easter Holidays

Easter is a great time to visit Cambodia; with the temperatures rising, you can expect dry days in the mid-30s°C. Get out early and explore the ancient temples before the midday sun kicks in, then cool off with a swim or a coconut in the shade. Cruise along the Mekong, meet elephants in Mondulkiri, or head to Kep or Kampot for a few days of laid-back family time and fresh seafood. If you want beach time, Koh Rong Samloem is still sunny and peaceful before the rains arrive.

Summer holidays (July - August)

The summer is the greenest season in Cambodia, but that also means there’s a fair bit of rain around. Generally the showers are short and often in the afternoon, with plenty of sunshine still to be enjoyed. The temples are quieter, and it’s a great time to explore Phnom Penh’s historic centre or the Temples of Angkor Wat at sunrise.

October Half Term

October marks the end of the rainy season, so the scenery is still green, but the showers are becoming less frequent. This is a fantastic time to travel, with fewer visitors and plenty to do. Families can explore Angkor’s jungle temples and swing amongst the trees on a ziplining adventure, cruise the Tonlé Sap, or spend time in the countryside getting a feel for daily life.

In the capital, Phnom Penh, the weather is pleasant for exploring markets, palaces and riverfront cafés, and by the coast, Kep and Kampot are beginning to dry out—great for a few slow days before heading home.

Christmas Holidays (late December – early January)

Christmas is one of the best times to visit Cambodia, with lots of sunshine and dry, warm days without being unbearably hot. This weather is perfect for trekking in the Cardamom Mountains, exploring temples, and meeting the elephants of Mondulkiri.

If you’re dreaming of Christmas on the beach, Koh Rong Samloem is a great pick—think clear waters, barefoot days and seafood dinners under the stars.
