Local Life & Hidden Temples
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Travel to Kampong Thom
Whether you’re travelling north or south between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, today you’ll start your fascinating and eye-opening little detour into the countryside. You’ll be picked up and taken to catch the local bus to Kampong Thom, around 3.5 hours away, where you’re met by a tuk tuk driver and taken to the village.
You’ll spend the night in a local homestay – a stilted wooden house owned by a local Khmer family. It’s pretty simple, with no hot water, but comfortable enough for the evening and your hosts will go out of their way to make you (and especially the kids) feel welcome and comfortable. You’ll also get a tasty home-cooked meal this evening.
*We can also upgrade you to a local hotel if you’d prefer!
Day 2 – Cycle to the temples, before continuing your journey
After waking to the sounds of the birds, and a hearty breakfast, you’ll head out by bike with a local guide to explore the countryside, and especially the ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk. These temples are well over 1,000 years old but aren’t visited by too many tourists, and with their setting amongst the forest, you’ll really get that Indiana Jones feeling.
After a picnic lunch, you’ll head back to the village in time to catch your direct transfer to either Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.
