Pristine jungles of Sungai Kapur
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Lahad Datu – Sungai Kapur’s Virgin Jungle Reserve
You’ll be met on arrival at Lahad Datu for your journey into the unspoilt Virgin Jungle Reserve of Sungai Kapur. This vast protected area boasts mangrove forests, towering dipterocarp trees and pristine rainforest. It’s home to exceptional biodiversity and teeming with wildlife such as Borneo pygmy elephants, orangutans, and clouded leopard, as well as smaller mammals and endemic bird species.
You’ll be staying in a comfortable eco-lodge in the heart of the rainforest. The rooms are spacious, and feature air-conditioning and an en-suite bathroom. All your meals are included and you’ll arrive just in time for lunch! In the afternoon, after a brief orientation walk, you’ll embark on a sunset river cruise searching for wildlife. After dinner back at the lodge, go for a night drive in search of nocturnal animals. The rainforest has a different kind of magic after dark, with nocturnal creatures like civets, leopard cats, mouse deer, and moonrats making their presence known.
Day 2 – Explore the rainforest
Wake up to the sounds of the surrounding rainforest and, after a quick snack, head out for a short morning hike. Take in the sights and sounds of the jungle as you visit Cuckoo Hide, the perfect spot to photograph some of Borneo’s unique birdlife. Back at the lodge, enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting off on a river cruise. Drift along the Segama River through its mangrove forests, keeping an eye out for wildlife like flying foxes and eagles. Return to the lodge for lunch.
You’ll have some time after lunch to relax and explore what the lodge has to offer – browse the information gallery or cool off with a swim in the dip pool. Late afternoon, you’ll head out on foot to explore the jungle on a long guided trek. Then after dinner grab a torch for a night walk around the lodge. Then fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest.
Day 3 – Sungai Kapur – Lahad Datu
Your rainforest immersion finishes today. You have the morning free for one last jungle walk, and after a final lunch you’ll travel back to Lahad Datu to continue your trip in Borneo.
