Sailing amongst the Glaciers

Bite-sized trip
  • Itinerary:
El Calafate - Perito Moreno Glacier - El Calafate
  • Duration:
    4 days / 3 nights (flexible)
  • Price:
from £609 per person (excluding flights)
Get glacial in Patagonia, exploring a frozen UNESCO World Heritage world of endless mountains, piercing winds, lakes and cool blue glaciers. This trip will take you into the frozen heart of Patagonia, a land of dazzling white snow, deep sapphire skies and cool blue glaciers. You’ll spend three days hiking across icebergs, drifting between giant glaciers and watch huge hunks of ice break off into freezing water. There’s nowhere quite like it.

Day 1 – Arrival in El Calafate

On arrival in glacier country you’ll be transferred directly to your hosteria in the centre of Calafate, packed with local atmosphere. The rooms here are cosy with central heating and plenty of warm blankets – essential stuff in this snowy wildnerness.

Day 2 – Boat trip

Today, you’ll explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Los Glaciares National Park, taking a boat trip across Lago Argentino. As long as you’re kitted out in woolly hats and thermal clothes, you won’t freeze up on the deck and the views are simply breathtaking. You’ll sail past giant icebergs bigger than houses and huge, impressive glaciers. As the boat slows and you creep past the towering wall of jagged ice, it’s hard not to be astounded.

Days 3-4 – Overland to Perito Moreno glacier & departure

This morning, you’ll be picked up at your hotel for the trip to the entrance of the Glaciares National Park. Half an hour later, you’ll arrive at the ‘pasarelas’, three platforms connected by a system of trails and stairs that run along part of the length of the Perito glacier. The Perito Moreno is 5km wide with ice peaks reaching over 80m in height.

Between November and April, you may well see huge chunks of ice crash into the water. Even if what seems like a tiny chunk breaks off, you’ll hear an almighty roar followed by a big splash. The wait is strangely addictive. We also definitely recommend a ‘mini-trek’ onto the Perito Moreno glacier itself.

After breakfast on day 4, this trip comes to an end and you’ll be transferred to the airport for the next adventure.
