Exploring Antarctic waters
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – From Ushuaia to Cape Horn
Your voyage of discovery begins the moment you set foot on board the Stella Australis. Cast off and sail through the snow-capped bays of Tierra del Fuego towards Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America.
Did you know that the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans collide on the 425-metre-high cliffs of Cape Horn? This creates spectacular weather conditions that not everyone could cope with in the past. The monument on the island you are visiting is a tribute to the memory of the many sailors who died here in the past centuries.
Day 2 – Cape Horn to Wulaia Bay
When you stand outside on the deck of the cruise ship, you will find no trace of humanity as far as the eye can see. You will now continue to follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin at Wulaia Bay. You walk through the ancient primeval forests that were completely buried under ice during the Ice Age. From the lookout point you see fjords, small islands, snow-capped mountain peaks and clear blue water giving you an understanding of why this was such a special place for Darwin.
Day 3 -Pía Glacier to Garibaldi Glacier
You continue your cruise through Patagonia amongst the chunks of ice on your way to the Pía Glacier. You exchange the cruise ship for a zodiac in which you will sail along with an experienced guide to the foot of the glacier. Imagine yourself even further back in time here, surrounded by the immense glacier that is millions of years old. You will now go ashore and after a short hike you reach the viewpoint from here you see how the glacier extends from the mountain range to the sea – a spectacular phenomenon!
Day 4 – Agostini Fjord – Aguila Glacier – Condor Glacier
This morning you start the day again with a well-prepared breakfast and an even better view. Today you sail with a zodiac towards terra firma. You set off and take a walk along the shore of the lagoon surrounded by mountains until you reach the Aguila glacier. Here you admire the ‘cold rainforest’ of Patagonia.
Day 5 – Magdalena Island to Punta Arenas Chile
The last stop before you set foot in Punta Arenas will be on Magdalena Island. Here you will take a walk at sunrise past a large colony of penguins to a small museum located in the island’s lighthouse. The penguins will wave you goodbye with their chirping and around noon you will arrive in Punta Arenas.
Punta Arenas is your final stop and time for you to continue your adventures.
