Treasures of Tirana
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Welcome to Tirana
For most travellers Tirana is the first acquaintance with Albania, and while some swiftly move on to the next destination, we definitely recommend spending a few nights in the city. It’s lively, eclectic and very different from the traditional European capitals. Here churches, mosques and synagogues line the sides of the main square, and stunning Venetian villas neighbour concrete apartment blocks painted in bright colours. Tirana may be a little rough around the edges, but its spirit is young and welcoming, and its transformation from the decades of isolation is simply inspiring.
Here you’ll stay in a modern hotel not far from the main square, making it easy to explore the city. Enjoy a stroll through the centre, explore the many museums (Bunk’Art is not to be missed) or take a cable car to the top of the mountain for the best sunset views of the city.
Day 2 – Explore the city
This morning you’ll meet your local guide and start getting to know Albania’s eclectic capital. During your tour you’ll visit the popular meeting spot of Skanderbeg Square and learn about the country’s fearless national hero, pop into the Et’hem Bey Mosque and walk up the Clock Tower for the best views. Your guide will tell you about Albania’s rich and diverse history, from ancient days to the turbulent recent past. At the end of your tour you’ll stroll around the trendy Blloku district, taste some local snacks and sip freshly brewed beer in the new bazaar.
The afternoon is free for you to keep exploring the city at your own pace. From trendy art galleries to hipster bars there’s plenty to keep you busy and entertained.
Day 3 – Farewell to Tirana
Today you’ll leave the busy capital behind and begin your adventure around Albania. Get ready to be blown away by the scenic landscapes, historical towns and warm hospitality.
Accommodation
For this bite-sized trip we offer the following options
Half-day kayaking in Karavasta Lagoon
Meet your local guide in Tirana and set off for Karavasta Lagoon, where you will go kayaking. Colonies of pelicans and flamingos come to winter here, and during the summer the species of birds are countless. Your guide will tell you everything about the lagoon and its local inhabitants, some of which are populating the surrounding pine forests.
Cooking class on a farm
Today you’ll be cooking a traditional Albanian dinner on a local farm. With the help of your welcoming hosts, you’ll pick up the vegetables from their garden and whip up a feast, consisting of pitta bread and a few other dishes (think mouth-watering boreks and fergese, a delicious one-pot eggs and veggies delight). In a bout 2 hours your dinner is served!
